HEALTHY SNACK IDEAS
We LOVE to snack! But who doesn’t?
Since we work from home and Trudie is homeschooled, we have really perfected our list of snacks. We’ve learned to eat healthy while enjoying the “snack” experience.
When I used to work in an office, I was always looking for easy things to grab to bring with me so that I wasn’t grabbing a donut at the local coffee/donut truck on my way into the office.
We’re here to share with you our list of healthy snack ideas! And, they are ones we actually enjoy eating!
Here we go 🙂 Top of the list of our healthy snack ideas…
1. RICE CAKES, ALMOND BUTTER & JAM
You can absolutely swap out the almond butter with peanut butter, we just prefer almond.
Why do we love it? The rice cake gives you that crunchy food satisfaction without the fat and calories of say, a potato chip.
The almond butter, or peanut butter, provides the much needed protein throughout the day, and the jam provides that tiny taste of sweetness!
And don’t feel like you have to do this, but I make my own jam at home so I know what’s in it, aka, no extra sugar! It’s actually REALLY EASY!
2. WATERMELON
Ah, how we are SO in love with watermelon!
Seriously, it’s our FAVORITE!
Alright, for anyone that doesn’t know the properties of watermelon:
- It’s mostly water
- Helps you detox
- Lowers inflammation
- Provides Vit. C, Vit. A, Potassium, Magnesium & more
- May improve heart health
AND, one bowl of this deliciousness will fill your tummy for hours. Plus, Arnold Schwarzenegger said he always has watermelon in the house, so it MUST be good!
3. VEGGIES AND HUMMUS
Do you like hummus? Do you like fresh cut veggies?
Then this is the snack for you!
Hummus provides protein and the vegetables provide all kinds of minerals and vitamins depending on what you are choosing.
We always fill our plate with the following finger friendly veggies:
- Cucumber
- Celery
- Baby carrots
- Red, yellow and green bell peppers
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Sugar snap peas
- Tomatoes
4. CANTALOUPE & COTTAGE CHEESE
Here’s why we love cottage cheese. It’s high in protein, low in calories, good for your gut health and good for your bones and teeth.
Cantaloupe is a great pair with cottage cheese, especially the taste! We usually choose cantaloupe over other fruit like pineapple because it contains less sugar.
It’s also high in fiber, potassium and Vitamin C.
This snack is sure to fill you up and keep you going throughout the day.
5. ENERGY BALLS
If you haven’t made these yet, you’ll want to!
You don’t need to bake them, many of them are 4 or 5 ingredients, and eating a couple of these will fill your tummy AND give you the satisfaction of chocolate!
One of the ingredients is protein powder, so you can add any type and flavor you would like. We use an organic chocolate protein powder that also has a probiotic in it for gut health…yum!
The recipe we use is as follows:
- 2 cups Oats
- 2 Scoops Protein Powder of Choice
- 1 cup peanut butter or almond butter
- ¾ cup maple syrup (you could use honey or agave)
6. AIR POPPED POPCORN
The first thing I will say is this is not for nutritional value. We keep this in the house because it’s a super low calorie snack that we can eat and eat without any guilt!
Not only does Trudie look for snacks, but so do we. Sometimes you want something crunchy, and you don’t want to grab potato chips because of the fat.
Our recommendation – make your own! That way, you can control the salt you put on it and the oil you use! You can make it right on the stove OR you can use my Mom’s super easy microwave hack!
Put ¼ cup of corn kernals in a paper bag, fold it over once and pop it into the microve for 3 minutes – no oil needed! Sprinkle some salt on after and enjoy 🙂
And there you have it! These are healthy snacks we always enjoy, we keep in the house, and we use to maintain our healthy lifestyle while still enjoying our snack life!
So go get snacking and stop worrying.
